Dick Benjamin, 62, from Holland, started donating blood when he was a teenager. In May of 2011, he hit the 35 gallon mark, making Dick one of Michigan Blood's top donors. “I’m not a very talented person, but the Lord gave me this gift,” said Dick. “I once lost someone very near and dear to me and I had extra time with him because of blood donors.”
Since then, Dick has made donating blood, first whole blood and now platelets, a priority. “I always make an appointment after each donation and schedule everything around that,” he said. “I’d like to see 300 donations, but the only goal I set is to keep donating faithfully.”
Dick was recently profiled by WZZM TV13's Val Lego and had a chance to meet some of the patients his donations help treat.
