State Sen. Hildenbrand Recognized With National Be The Match® Advocacy Award

Minneapolis, MN (November 6, 2014) - State Sen. Dave Hildenbrand (R-Lowell) will be recognized by the national Be The Match® organization on Friday, November 7 at their 27th Annual Council Meeting in Minneapolis.

Hildenbrand will receive the 2014 Public Advocacy Award for his legislative efforts to promote the Be The Match Registry and bone marrow donations. In a prepared statement Be The Match offered the following:

“Public Advocacy Award – Senator Dave Hildenbrand of Michigan, for consistent and unrelenting support of patients with blood cancers who need marrow transplants. Sen. Hildenbrand has sponsored several legislative efforts to support bone marrow donor recruitment efforts throughout the state. He also has worked to educate his fellow legislators to further awareness, coordinated a donor registry drive that added 40 new registry members and has helped raise $6,500 in support of Be The Match’s life-saving mission.”

“Be The Match is a truly lifesaving organization, and I am honored to receive this recognition,” says Hildenbrand.  “As I have interacted with Michigan Blood in Grand Rapids and Be The Match, I have been impressed with the remarkable work they do. We are so grateful to the staff, marrow donors, and countless other supporters and volunteers who work tirelessly to give people with serious illnesses a second chance at life. What a special organization with such a heartfelt mission.”

Hildenbrand also sponsored Senate Bill 903, which would create a Be The Match specialty license plate in Michigan to raise awareness and funds for the program.

Michigan Blood, headquartered in Grand Rapids, serves as an official partner with Be The Match and they work to organize donor registry events to ensure adequate new donors are added to the registry each year. Additionally, once a potential donor is identified, they provide support services and guidance throughout the donation process.
