Michigan Blood Hosts Diversity Blood Drive in Honor of CMU Athlete Derrick Nash

Michigan Blood is hosting a special blood drive in honor of Central Michigan University athlete Derrick Nash.

The #NASHSTRONG Diversity Blood Drive will run from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 31 at CMU’s Bovee University Center in the Maroon and Gold Room. To help with Nash’s medical expenses, Michigan Blood will donate $10 to the Derrick Nash Fund for every person who attempts to donate. As a special thank you, everyone who registers to donate will also receive a coupon for a free large, one-topping pizza from Papa John’s Pizza.

Nash was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2013 during his senior year at Carrollton High School in Saginaw. The CMU freshman is still battling cancer and is a candidate for a bone marrow transplant.

During treatment, Nash has received numerous lifesaving blood transfusions. For patients in need of regular blood transfusions, the best match may come from a donor of the same ethnic background.

“It is vital that the community blood supply reflect the diversity of the community,” said Tamar Chipp, community relations coordinator for Michigan Blood. “Having a diverse blood supply ensures the best care for patients in need of blood transfusions.”

Michigan Blood recently launched an initiative to diversify the blood supply to raise awareness about the need for African-American blood donors. While blood donations from all ethnic groups are critical, Michigan Blood has identified a specific need for African-American donors. Currently, less than two percent of African-Americans give blood.

To schedule an appointment to donate blood at the #NASHSTRONG Diversity Blood Drive, individuals can visit www.miblood.org or call 1-866-MIBLOOD. Any healthy person 17 or older (or 16 with parental consent) who weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood every 56 days.
