GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich.--It was a close game, but no one paid much attention to who won or lost - instead, the focus was on Be The Match at Michigan Blood, and the money raised to find more life-saving marrow matches.
By the end of the Feb. 10th match, the organization walked away with more than $1,300.
"It was a great event - the [Detroit Red Wings Alumni] said it was one of the best teams they played," said Barbara Hile, Director of Be The Match at Michigan Blood, "Hopefully, we can do this again in the future."
Team Michigan Blood managed to tie the game in the last few seconds, ending the match with a 6-6 score.
There was a sad tone to the night, however, as players and volunteers learned Mike Ilitch, owner of the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers, passed away. A moment of silence was held on the ice before the match, and several local news outlets came by the game to get a response from former players.
Included in the lineup for the Detroit Red Wings Alumni were Dino Ciccarelli, Mickey Redmond, Jimmy Carson, and Petr Klima. Fans of all ages were excited to see their favorites on the ice again - a few even managed to get an autograph.
Michigan Blood would like to thank the hockey team that donned jerseys to represent us and raise money for Be The Match. We'd also like to thank the Detroit Red Wings Alumni team for coming out to support the cause.
