New Community Donor Center Will Open in Hastings

September 26, 2006

HASTINGS, MI: On October 6, 2006 Michigan Community Blood Centers will open the Pennock Community Donor Center in Pennock Hospital’s Conference Center, 1009 Green Street. Blood donors will be welcome to roll up their sleeves from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., and everyone who tries to donate will receive a special thank-you gift.

No appointment is necessary, and any healthy person 17 or older who weighs 110 pounds or more may be eligible to give blood every 56 days. Donating a pint of blood takes just 7-10 minutes; the entire process (including registration, health screening, blood donation, and snack/rest period afterward) takes 45-60 minutes.

People who are unable to give blood are still welcome to stop in at the Grand Opening, and say hello to staff from Michigan Community Blood Centers and Pennock.

Following the October 6 Grand Opening, the Pennock Community Donor Center will be open regularly on a monthly basis, welcoming donors from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the following dates: (2006) November 3, December 1, December 22; (2007) February 2, March 2, April 6, May 4, June 1, July 6, August 3, September 7, October 5, November 2, December 7.

“We hope the new Pennock Community Donor Center will provide a convenient option for people in the Hastings area,” said Kristen Sisson, Michigan Community Blood Centers special events and community relations director. “We also will continue to sponsor mobile blood drives at various sites in the community, but a permanent donation site is a nice alternative for people who want to establish a regular routine of donating at a specific place and time. We also hope more donors will be encouraged to give regularly, because that’s what we need to keep pace as our local hospitals’ need for blood continues to increase.”

Pennock has sponsored regular blood drives with Michigan Community Blood Centers since 2004.

Michigan Community Blood Centers is the independent nonprofit blood bank that provides 100 percent of the regular blood supply for Pennock Health Services, and for all hospitals in Kent County. Statewide, Michigan Community Blood Centers supplies hospitals in four major regions with a combined population of more than 1. 5 million. After meeting all local needs, Michigan Community Blood Centers also sends blood to other communities across the state and nation, and supports disaster-related and military blood needs. Michigan Community Blood Centers is a member of America’s Blood Centers, the nation’s largest provider of blood and blood-related services, collecting 50% of America’s blood supply and 100% of Canada’s blood supply each year.
