New Community Donor Center to Open in Chesaning

September 28, 2006

CHESANING, MI: On October 6, Michigan Community Blood Centers will open a new Community Donor Center at St. Mary’s of Michigan, 1600 West Brady. Blood donors are invited to help save lives by giving blood from Noon to 6 p.m. For an appointment (preferred) or for more information, people should call 989-497-1036.

Any healthy person 17 or older who weighs 110 pounds or more may be eligible to give blood every 56 days. Donating a pint of blood takes just 7-10 minutes; the entire process (including registration, health screening, blood donation, and snack/rest period afterward) takes 45-60 minutes.

Following the October 6 opening, the Chesaning Community Donor Center will be open for blood donations from Noon to 6 p.m. on the first Friday of every even-numbered month, as follows: (2006) December 1; (2007) February 2, April 6, June 1, August 3, October 5, and December 7.

“Our goal in creating the Chesaning Community Donor Center is greater convenience for blood donors in the Chesaning area,” said Gail Manntz, who heads donor recruitment for Michigan Community Blood Centers in this region. “We will continue to hold mobile blood drives at various sites in the region, too – but people who would prefer to establish a regular routine of donating at a specific place and time may find it more convenient to come to the Community Donor Center. And the every-other-month donation hours at the new Chesaning Center coordinate very well with the two-month interval that is required between blood donations.”

Michigan Community Blood Centers is the independent nonprofit blood bank that provides 100 percent of the regular blood supply for hospitals in Saginaw, Bay, Midland, Clare, and Gladwin counties. Statewide, Michigan Community Blood Centers supplies hospitals in four major regions with a combined population of more than 1. 5 million. After meeting all local needs, Michigan Community Blood Centers also sends blood to other communities across the state and nation, and supports disaster-related and military blood needs. Michigan Community Blood Centers is a member of America’s Blood Centers, the nation’s largest provider of blood and blood-related services, collecting 50% of America’s blood supply and 100% of Canada’s blood supply each year.
