Shirley McKinney has been a loyal Michigan Blood Volunteer since December 2012.  She volunteers in the Kalamazoo center’s post donation area and enjoys meeting and talking to donors.

Shirley has lived in the Kalamazoo/Parchment area for nearly her whole life, leaving for seven months to be with her husband, Ralph, who was in the army and stationed in Washington state.  She attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College for an administrative assistant education and enjoyed working at Tower, Pinkster & Titus, and word processing at a bank and then after retirement for Manpower where she received the Secretary of the Year award.

In her free time Shirley enjoys crocheting, knitting, reading, crafts and volunteering at the Portage Senior Center. Shirley also makes time to donate blood, which she began doing in July 2012. She and her husband set up the same donation day and come in together.

Shirley and Ralph also like traveling together and have been RV camping for the last twenty years and attend Samboree RV gatherings two times each year. Their travels have taken them to Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Arizona and throughout Michigan. It is during these times that Shirley enjoys visiting with friends as well as singing along with Ralph who plays guitar.

Shirley and Ralph celebrate 58 years of marriage this June and together raised four boys and are now enjoying their seven grandchildren and one great grandson.

Thank you Shirley for bringing your smile to Michigan Blood.
